Lean closer, little one. The wind outside our circle of dry sticks has the teeth of the cold months, and my breath is growing short, like the last water in a clay soak. Do you see these embers? They are the red eyes of the old nights, fading. You must listen with your skin, not just your ears, for I am the last who carries the song of how we began. When my tongue goes stiff and silent, this story must live in your chest, or our people will vanish as if we were never carved from the mud.

Before there was the cry of the hawk or the smell of roasted seed, the earth was flat. It was a cold, grey skin stretched over nothing. No hills, no creeks, no shade of the coolibah tree. Only a heavy silence that pressed down on the dirt. Beneath that hard, cracked crust, we slept. We were not men yet, nor women, nor kangaroos. We were shapeless things, cold and unbreathing, folded into the dark wet clay like seeds waiting for the rain that had never fallen.

The Stirring in the Deep

Then, she woke. Deep in the belly of the dark, the Great Rainbow Serpent stirred. She was older than the stones, filled with the colors of things that had not yet been seen—the red of dry blood, the blue of the high sky, the yellow of the wattle bloom. She did not walk, for she had no legs, but her body was wider than the widest dry riverbed you have ever crossed. When she moved, the earth shivered. Can you feel it in the soles of your feet, even now? That is her old weight, still settled deep below.

She pushed upward, her hard scales scraping against the underside of the world. The sound was like grinding teeth, a great roar that broke the silence of the first morning. With a mighty heave, she broke through the crust. The cold mist of the primeval dawn clung to her skin as she rose into the empty air, tasting the wind with her long, black tongue. The world was too flat, too quiet for her liking. And so, she began to crawl.

Carving the Veins of the Earth

As she slithered across the featureless plains, her massive belly ploughed deep into the soil. She did not travel in straight lines, for the spirit of the water moves in curves. Where she wound her body, deep valleys opened. Where she rested her heavy head, great hollows were scooped from the clay. She called to the rain, and the first clouds gathered, heavy and dark like bruised fruit. They wept upon her tracks, filling the deep furrows she had carved with cold, sweet water. These became our rivers—the winding snakes of water that keep the land alive.

But she was not alone in her labor. As she pushed the dirt aside, it piled high, drying under the first rays of the waking sun to become the red ridges and the stony gullies where the wallabies now hide. She created the law of the country: that water must flow to the low places, and the high places must catch the wind. She taught the land how to breathe, making the trees grow along her banks to hold the soil together with their woody fingers.

The First Breath of Clay

When the rivers were full and the grass began to whisper in the breeze, the Serpent stopped. She looked down into the wet banks of the newly carved creeks, where we still slept beneath the mud. She reached down with her hot breath, warming the cold clay. She called out a name—a sound that was both a song and a command. It vibrated through the mud, shaking us from our long, dark sleep.

I remember the memory of that first waking, passed down from grandfather to father, and now to me. It was a sudden, sharp shock. The wet mud clung to our eyes and stuffed our nostrils. Then came the first breath. It was not gentle. It was a cold, burning rush of air that smelled of wet earth, eucalyptus, and the raw scent of the river. Our lungs, which had known only the heavy stillness of the underground, screamed as they filled with the wind. We dragged ourselves out of the slime, shivering, blinking against the fierce light of the new sun.

The Law of the Living Soil

As we stood on the damp banks, wiping the yellow clay from our limbs, the Great Serpent spoke to us. Her voice was like the rolling of thunder over the western hills. She told us that we were not owners of this dirt, but its children. We were made from the same mud that grew the grass and nurtured the emu. If we hurt the river, we hurt our own blood. If we forgot the song of her journey, the water would dry up, and the earth would go hard and silent once more.

This is the sacred truth you must carry in your heart, little one. We do not walk upon the earth; we walk within it. Every rock is a bone of the ancestors; every creek is the path of her ancient belly. When you hunt, when you gather the seed, you must ask the land for permission, for it is alive, watching us with a thousand eyes of leaf and stone.

Look, the fire is nearly gone. Only a single red coal remains, pulsing like a tiny heart in the ash. My breath is thin, but yours is strong and warm. Take this story, wrap it in your mind like a dry kangaroo skin, and keep it safe from the cold. When the morning sun touches the red ridges tomorrow, look at the river winding through the trees, and remember the Great Mother who carved it for us. Sleep now, child of the clay, while the stars—the eyes of those who walked before us—keep watch over the dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did the earth's topography form if it was originally flat?

The earth's topography was shaped by the physical movement of the Great Rainbow Serpent. As she slithered across the featureless plains, her massive belly ploughed deep valleys into the soil, and where she rested her head, great hollows were scooped out. The dirt she pushed aside dried under the sun, forming the red ridges and stony gullies we see today.

What caused the dry riverbeds to fill with water for the first time?

After carving deep furrows into the earth with her winding body, the Great Rainbow Serpent called to the rain. Heavy, dark clouds gathered and wept upon her tracks. This rainwater filled the deep, winding paths she had carved, creating the very first rivers that keep the land alive.

How did the first human ancestors transition from shapeless entities into living beings?

The first ancestors slept as shapeless, unbreathing forms folded in the dark clay beneath the riverbanks. The Rainbow Serpent warmed the cold clay with her hot breath and called out a powerful name. This song-like command vibrated through the mud, waking them and forcing them to take their first sharp, burning breath of air.

What is the significance of the wind and rivers in the creation of the law of the country?

The Rainbow Serpent established the fundamental law of the country through her physical creation. By carving the landscape, she decreed that water must flow to the low places and high places must catch the wind. She also made trees grow along the riverbanks to hold the soil together, teaching the land how to breathe and maintain balance.
