Lean closer, little one. The fire is eating its last dry branches, and the cold of the dark hills is creeping into my old bones. Do not look away from the embers. Your eyes must hold the glow of this fire, just as your ears must hold my voice. I am the last who remembers the tongue of our grandmothers, the last who can tell you how our feet came to walk upon this wet, sweet earth. When my breath fails, this story will live only in you. Listen. Feel the cold air on your face, and remember that once, there was no ground to catch a falling tear. There was only the great, grey water below, and the Sky World above.

The Rift in the Sky

Before this land had a name, before the pine trees drank the morning fog, there was a world above the clouds. In that place grew the Great Tree of Life, its roots deep in the celestial soil, its branches heavy with white blossoms that lit the darkness. A young woman, pregnant with new life, lived there. She was the Sky Woman. In her chest beat a heart that knew the rhythm of the wind, but she did not yet know the heavy pull of the earth.

“The tree,” she whispered to the wind, her fingers tracing the rough, glowing bark. But a great storm of change was stirring. A hole was torn in the floor of the Sky World, right where the roots of the Great Tree clung to the heavens. Curious, she leaned over the edge. She looked down into the endless, swirling blue void. The wind from below was not like the gentle breath of her home; it was a wild, hungry thing. It pulled at her hair, her clothes, and then, with a soft cry that was swallowed by the emptiness, she slipped. She fell through the sky, clutching a handful of seeds and roots she had grabbed from the Great Tree as she tumbled into the great nothingness.

The Softness of Wings

Imagine the terror of that first descent, little one. No hand to hold, no branch to catch. Only the rush of cold air roaring in her ears, her hair whipping against her face like wild vines. Below her, the world was nothing but water, reflecting the grey clouds like a cold, flat mirror. But she was not unseen. The creatures of the water looked up. Their eyes, accustomed to the dim light of the deep, saw a spark of pure white light falling from the heavens.

“A human is falling,” the Great Loon called out, his voice echoing across the endless waves. “She has no wings to fly, and the water will drown her. We must catch her.”

A great flock of geese rose from the water, their wings beating in unison, creating a soft, feathered blanket in the sky. They flew upward, meeting her fall. Can you feel it? The sudden, gentle sigh of her body landing against the warmth of a thousand soft feathers. They slowed her descent, carrying her down toward the water. But they knew their wings could not hold her forever. She needed a place to stand, a place to plant the seeds she still clutched in her cold, trembling hands.

The Gift of the Muskrat

From the depths of the grey water rose the Great Turtle. His shell was dark, slick, and as broad as a mountain. He offered his back as a resting place. The geese lowered the Sky Woman gently onto the hard, wet ridges of his shell. She stood, but there was no soil, only the cold, unforgiving stone of his back. She looked at the seeds of the Tree of Life in her palm—they were dying for want of earth.

“I will dive to the bottom,” said the Beaver, his tail slapping the water. He plunged into the black depths, seeking the mud of the old world. The water was deep, so deep that the light of the sun could not follow him. He returned to the surface, unconscious, his lungs filled with water and his paws empty. The Loon tried next, his sleek body cutting through the currents like an arrow, but he too returned with nothing but water in his eyes.

Then, the tiny Muskrat stepped forward. The others laughed, for he was small and weak. But his heart was strong. “I will go,” he whispered. He dove. The minutes stretched into hours. The water was cold enough to freeze the blood, and the pressure pressed against his ribs. He swam deeper than any had ever dared, down into the absolute blackness where the earth slept. When his lungs were screaming for air and his eyes were blind with darkness, his tiny paws scraped the bottom. He grabbed a small clump of wet, dark mud, clutched it to his chest, and kicked upward with his last breath.

The Dance of Creation

When the Muskrat floated to the top, he seemed dead. But the Sky Woman gently opened his tiny, stiff paw. There, tucked inside, was a small, warm lump of dark clay. She wept with gratitude, her tears falling onto the mud, warming it with the heat of her spirit. She placed the wet clay onto the center of the Great Turtle’s back.

Then, she began to dance. She walked in a wide circle, her bare feet pressing into the mud, moving in the direction of the sun’s path. With every step she took, the mud grew. It stretched over the turtle’s shell, expanding outward into the water. She sang the songs of her ancestors, her voice carrying across the new shores. As she danced, she scattered the seeds of the Great Tree. Grass sprouted beneath her heels; giant pines rushed upward to touch the sky; rivers carved their paths through the soft valleys.

The small lump of clay became the vast land we walk upon today—Turtle Island. It was born of cooperation, of a small creature’s sacrifice, and a woman’s sacred dance. Remember this, child, when you walk upon the earth. Every step you take is a step upon the back of the Great Turtle. The ground beneath your feet is alive, bought with the breath of the Muskrat and shaped by the feet of the Sky Woman. Do not let the fire go out. Keep the story warm in your chest, and pass it to the ones who come after you, before the snow covers our tracks forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Sky Woman fall from the Sky World, and what did she bring with her?

Sky Woman fell through a rift created near the roots of the Great Tree of Life after a great storm. As she slipped into the void, she grabbed a handful of seeds and roots from the sacred tree, which she kept in her hands during her descent to the water world below.

How did the water creatures prevent Sky Woman from drowning during her fall?

The water creatures spotted her falling spark. The Great Loon alerted the others, prompting a massive flock of geese to fly upward. They caught her on a soft blanket of their feathers, slowing her descent before delivering her safely to the water's surface.

Where did Sky Woman first find a physical place to rest after descending from the sky?

She was placed on the back of the Great Turtle, who rose from the deep grey water. His broad, dark, and slick shell served as her first resting place, though it initially lacked any soil for her to plant her celestial seeds.

Which animals attempted to retrieve mud from the deep water, and who succeeded?

The Beaver and the Loon both attempted to dive to the bottom of the deep water to retrieve mud, but both failed and returned empty-handed. The tiny Muskrat then volunteered to dive, despite being mocked by the other animals for his small size.
