The Canadian Shield is a vast, ancient landscape of granite, dark pine forests, and deep, cold lakes. On May 20, 1967, Stefan Michalak, an industrial mechanic and passionate amateur prospector, stepped into this quiet wilderness near Falcon Lake, Manitoba. Armed with a geological hammer and a map, he was searching for veins of quartz and silver. He expected nothing more than a solitary weekend of hard work. Instead, he would stumble into one of the most chilling, thoroughly documented, and unexplained close encounters of the twentieth century.

The morning was crisp and clear. By midday, Stefan was working near a rocky plateau when the sudden, frantic honking of a flock of geese shattered the silence. He looked up, expecting to see a predator. Instead, his eyes locked onto two glowing, cigar-shaped objects descending through the clouds. They glowed with an intense, reddish-orange light. As they drew closer, one of the objects hovered in the air before flying away into the clouds, while the other descended slowly, landing on a flat dome of rock about one hundred and fifty feet from where he stood.

A Touch of Fire

Stefan watched in awe as the object changed color, shifting from a bright red to a metallic, golden-gray sheen. It resembled a seamless, disc-shaped saucer. The air around him grew warm, thick with the smell of sulfur and the sharp, ozone tang of a powerful electrical discharge. A low, humming sound, like a massive electric motor running at high speed, vibrated through the granite beneath his boots.

For nearly half an hour, Stefan sat behind a bush, sketching the craft in his notebook. Believing it to be an experimental American military vessel, he decided to approach. He heard a muffled sound coming from a hatch on the side of the craft—voices that sounded like human speech, though the words were completely unintelligible. “Okay, you Yankees, are you having trouble?” he called out in English. There was no response. He tried Russian, German, and Polish, but the voices fell silent.

Summoning his courage, Stefan walked up to the craft. He put on his safety goggles and reached out to touch the side of the vessel. The metal was so incredibly hot that it instantly melted the fingertips of his leather gloves. Suddenly, the hatch slid shut with a metallic snap, and the craft began to rotate counterclockwise. Stefan stepped back, but he wasn’t fast enough.

The Physical Scars and Silent Evidence

As the craft spun, a panel on the side came into view. It was a exhaust vent, perforated with a grid of small, square holes. Before Stefan could react, a blast of superheated gas shot from the vent, striking him directly in the chest. The force knocked him backward onto the rock. His flannel shirt and undershirt erupted into flames.

Gasping for breath, Stefan tore off his burning clothes as the craft rose into the air and vanished into the gray afternoon sky. Dazed, nauseous, and in agonizing pain, he managed to make the long, grueling trek back to his motel in Falcon Lake, and eventually to a hospital in Winnipeg. But his ordeal was only beginning.

When doctors examined Stefan, they were baffled. On his chest was a perfect, grid-like pattern of circular, blistered burns—exactly matching the exhaust vent he had described. In the days that followed, Stefan fell violently ill. He suffered from severe nausea, headaches, dramatic weight loss, and a plummeting white blood cell count. These were the classic, terrifying symptoms of acute radiation sickness.

An Unsolved Legacy

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and civilian investigators soon descended upon the landing site. What they found defied easy explanation. At the exact spot where Stefan said the craft had landed, a circle of vegetation was completely dead. The soil and the rock itself were highly radioactive.

Even more mysterious were the small, metallic pellets found nestled in the cracks of the granite rock. Subsequent laboratory analysis revealed these pellets to be made of highly purified silver, covered in a radioactive isotope that could not be easily explained by natural occurrences. Stefan’s burnt undershirt and glove were also tested and found to be highly radioactive, providing physical proof of an encounter that many skeptics tried to dismiss as a hoax.

Despite intense scrutiny, Stefan Michalak never changed his story, nor did he seek financial gain from his experience. He remained a reluctant witness to the impossible until his death in 1999. The physical scars on his chest eventually faded to a faint, checkered pattern, but the memory of that blinding flash of heat remained etched in his mind forever. Deep in the Manitoba woods, the granite plateau remains silent, a lonely monument to a day when the unknown reached out and left a permanent mark on a quiet prospector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Stefan Michalak try to communicate with the craft in multiple languages?

Michalak initially believed the craft was a secret, experimental military vessel belonging to the United States. When he heard muffled, human-like voices coming from inside, he first called out in English. Receiving no response, he attempted to communicate in Russian, German, and Polish, languages he spoke, hoping to find a common tongue with the crew.

What physical evidence of the incident was found at the Falcon Lake landing site?

Investigators from the RCMP and RCAF discovered a distinct circle of completely dead vegetation where the craft had landed. Furthermore, the soil and granite rock in that exact spot tested highly radioactive, and unusual metallic pellets were found wedged into the cracks of the stone.

What specific health symptoms did Michalak experience after his encounter?

Immediately after the incident, Michalak suffered from severe, grid-patterned burns on his chest. In the following days, he experienced intense nausea, violent headaches, rapid weight loss, and a dangerous drop in his white blood cell count, which are classic symptoms of acute radiation sickness.

How did Michalak burn his hands during the encounter if he didn't touch the exhaust?

Before the exhaust vent blasted him with superheated gas, Michalak approached the craft and reached out to touch its outer hull. The metallic surface of the vessel was so intensely hot that it instantly melted the fingertips of his protective leather gloves, burning him before the craft even began to rotate.
