You are the last who remembers the tongue of the old ones, the last who will hear how we came to be before the silence takes us both. Listen. The Shore of the Grey World

Before there were paths worn into the dirt, before the first iron was forged or the first acorn planted, there was only the sea and the great emptiness. The world was young, but it was a cold, unyielding thing. The sky was the color of a wet slate, and the waves did not sing; they only roared, throwing their white teeth against the black rocks. Along this desolate shore walked three. They were not men, for men did not yet exist to name them. Mind and Form from the Shapers

With his fingers, he smoothed the rough bark, shaping limbs where there were only broken knots, molding the soft wood of the elm into curves that could hold life, and the ash into straight, strong bone. He gave them the lá—the blood that runs hot and red, the skin that feels the bite of the frost, and the eyes that can see the dawn. Under his touch, the pale wood softened into yielding flesh. The grey bark split and fell away like a discarded winter coat, revealing the pink and gold of living skin.

He did not touch their bodies, but placed his hands over their temples, where the pulse was beginning to thrum like a trapped bird. He gave them óðr—the mind, the wit, and the burning desire to know. The First Awakening

The ash became Ask, the first man, standing tall and unyielding against the wind. The elm became Embla, the first woman, graceful and strong, her roots tangled deep within the spirit of the world. They stood on the wet shore, their bare feet sinking into the freezing mud, yet they did not shiver. They looked at the gods, and then they looked at the wide, empty world before them.
