穿越五千年的泥板絮語:人類解開的最早文字,寫了些什麼?

在人類漫長的文明史中,我們總在追尋一個問題:人類最早把記憶寫下來,究竟寫了什麼?

當我們把目光投向考古學的源頭,目前已被人類成功破譯的最古老文字系統,誕生於距今約 5,000 至 5,500 年前的美索不達米亞平原(即今天的伊拉克境內)—這就是由蘇美(Sumerians)與阿卡德人所發展出的**「楔形文字」(Cuneiform)**。

今天,就讓我們一起走進這段塵封千年的時光,看看考古學家如何像偵探一樣,解開這群地球上最早「記錄生活」的人們留下的祕密。

故事的起點:一隻竹筆與一塊濕泥板

想像一下,公元前 3200 年的美索不達米亞,幼發拉底河與底格里斯河的交界處。這裡的氣候乾燥,沒有珍貴的埃及紙莎草,也沒有後來的造紙術。  

當地的蘇美人發現了一樣隨手可得的材料:泥土。

他們將河邊粘性極佳的泥土捏成一塊塊小小的方餅(泥板),然後削尖蘆葦稈當作筆,在泥板上壓印出一個個帶有「楔形」(三角形頭部與線條)的符號。這些泥板在兩河流域熾熱的陽光下曬乾後,竟然比許多紙張還要耐用,歷經數千年都不曾腐爛。

但最初,這群聰明的古代人寫下的,並不是浪漫的詩歌,也不是英雄的史詩,而是——賬單。  

被破譯的古老內容:世界上第一位留下名字的人,竟然是……會計師?

隨著考古學家與古語言學家的破譯,我們終於知道這些最早期(原始楔形文字時期)的泥板上寫了什麼。

當時的文字主要是為了「行政與經濟管理」而生的。破譯出來的內容驚人地接地氣:

 「大麥 29,086 斗,預計 37 個月內交付。」

 「啤酒 5 罐。」

 「奴隸 4 名。」

其中最出名的一塊破譯泥板(庫辛泥板 Kushim Tablet),記載著大麥交易的簽核紀錄。泥板最後落款了一個名字:「Kushim」(庫辛)。

這位「庫辛」既不是高高在上的國王,也不是神聖的神官,而是一位管理神廟資產的會計師。這意味著,人類歷史上第一個在書面上記錄並留名至今的人,竟然是一位認真記賬的基層上班員!

隨著文字進化,到了公元前 2000 年左右,楔形文字不再只是記賬符號,它開始記錄語言的發音。於是,我們破譯出了人類歷史上最早的文學巨作**《吉爾伽美什史詩》(Epic of Gilgamesh)**,記錄著古代英雄對死亡的恐懼、對永生的追求,以及那場影響了後來眾多文明的大洪水傳說。

懸崖上的蜘蛛人:破譯楔形文字的傳奇冒險

這麼複雜的楔形文字,後人究竟是怎麼看懂的?這段破譯過程本身就是一部精彩絕倫的冒險電影。

楔形文字在公元 1 世紀左右徹底失傳,此後近一千八百年,無人能懂。直到 19 世紀,一位名叫**亨利·羅林森(Henry Rawlinson)**的英國陸軍官員登場。  

在今天伊朗西部的比蘇通山(Mount Behistun),懸崖峭壁上刻著一幅巨大的浮雕與三種語言對照的銘文——這就是著名的**《比蘇通銘文》。這幅銘文由波斯帝國的大流士大帝下令建造,分別用古波斯語、埃蘭語、巴比倫語(阿卡德語的一種)**記錄了他的豐功偉業。

《比蘇通銘文》之於楔形文字,就像《羅塞塔石碑》之於埃及象形文字。

為了抄寫懸崖上的銘文,羅林森化身「極限運動員」,冒著生命危險爬上百公尺高的陡峭懸崖。有時他得站在窄小的岩石邊緣,有時甚至雇用了當地的勇敢少年,用繩索懸吊在半空中,將濕紙壓在石壁上記下符號(稱為拓印)。

有了這份珍貴的「三語對照表」,學者們先從已知字數較少、較簡單的古波斯語入手,破解了人名(如大流士、薛西斯),接著倒推回更複雜的巴比倫楔形文字。到了 1850 年代,這套沈睡了數千年的密碼,終於被人類重新讀懂。

結語:文字,讓靈魂得以超越時間

今天,世界各地的博物館裡保存著數十萬塊楔形文字泥板。當我們透過破譯的內容重新審視這些文物時,會發現古人與我們的距離並不遙遠:

泥板上記錄著商人抱怨貨物品質不佳的客訴信、學生抱怨老師太嚴格的日記、母親給遠行孩子寫的家書,以及詩人對宇宙萬物的詠嘆。

人類破譯最早的文字,不僅僅是在解開考古學上的學術謎題,更是打開了一扇時空之門——讓我們在五千年後的今天,依然能讀懂那群在幼發拉底河畔捏著泥板的人們,心中的喜怒哀樂。
