Lean closer, child. The embers of our fire are losing their red teeth, and the cold from the salt-water is crawling up our spines. Listen to the hiss of the damp cedar. My voice is old, like the dry kelp that rattles in the wind, but you must hold these words in your chest. You are the last who will hear them in the tongue of our grandfathers. Long before the great longhouses stood, before the iron axes bit into the red cedar, the world was nothing but wetness, shadow, and the endless beating of the tide.

In those days, the sky was a heavy gray blanket that never lifted. There was no one to walk the beaches, no one to burn the wood, no one to sing to the salmon. There was only Yahl, the Great Raven. His wings were the color of obsidian, so black they seemed to drink what little light crept through the fog. He was a restless spirit, easily bored, flying over the cold, gray foam of Naikoon, looking for mischief or a song to break the silence of the world.

The Sound in the Wet Sand

It was on the spit of Rose Spit, where the two oceans fight and spit white foam into the air, that Yahl heard it. The tide had just gone out, leaving the sand dark, wet, and ribbed like the roof of a dog’s mouth. The wind was biting, carrying the sharp, clean stink of rotting kelp and cold mud. Yahl landed with a heavy, wet thud. His talons sank into the cold muck.

Then came the sound. It was not the cry of a gull, nor the groan of a drifting log. It was a soft, wet rustling, like dry leaves rubbing together inside a hollow tree, or the collective whimpering of small, cold animals. Yahl cocked his head, his sharp black eye focusing on a massive, ancient clam shell half-buried in the wet gravel. The shell was old, its surface scarred by the teeth of the sea and stained with green brine. It was clamped shut, but through the tiny crack where the two halves met, the strange sound bubbled forth.

The Timid Creatures of the Dark

Yahl hopped closer, his heavy beak clicking. He pressed his eye to the dark slit. Inside, huddled in the damp, slippery darkness, were tiny, pale creatures. They had no feathers, no fur, and no shells of their own. They were naked, soft, and shivering, clinging to one another in the slick, pearly belly of the shell. They looked up at the giant black eye of the Raven and shrank back in terror, whimpering in their wordless tongue.

Yahl was amused. He did not want to eat them; they were too small, too strange, and far too interesting. He wanted to see them walk. But how to get them out of their safe, dark home? If he cracked the shell with his beak, he would crush them. He had to use his wits, the trickster’s greatest tool. He began to speak to them. He did not yell; he spoke in a low, bubbling whistle, a sound like water laughing over smooth stones.

The First Shock of Breath

“Come out,” Yahl coaxed, his voice vibrating through the thick shell. “The world outside is vast and full of wonder. There is room to stretch your limbs. There is the taste of the fresh wind and the warmth of the sun, though it hides behind the clouds today. Why stay crowded in the dark, wet grease of the shell? Come out and see.”

The tiny creatures stopped their whimpering. One of them, bolder than the rest, nudged his way to the opening. He poked a small, pale head through the crack. The air outside was cold—so cold it bit his skin. He gasped, and that first, sharp shock of air rushed into his chest, filling his lungs for the very first time. He shivered, but he did not pull back. He looked at the vast gray sky, the towering green wall of the forest in the distance, and the glistening black feathers of the giant bird waiting on the sand.

The Birth of the Haida

Slowly, hesitantly, the little man crawled out of the shell, his soft feet touching the wet, coarse gravel of the beach. Another followed, then another, sliding out of the pearly darkness like salmon fry leaving the gravel of a creek. They stood on the beach, naked and shivering, blinking against the gray light, clutching their arms across their chests. These were the first of our people, the Haida.

Yahl watched them with a crooked tilt of his head. They were weak, yes, and they cried easily, but they had hands to build and voices to tell stories. He had brought them out of the dark, and from that day on, their lives would be bound to the sea, the forest, and the shadow of the Raven’s wing. Remember this, child, as the fire dies. We did not fall from the stars. We were coaxed from the wet sand, and to the wet sand we will one day return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why didn't Yahl use his powerful beak to break open the clam shell?

Although Yahl had a strong beak, he chose not to crack the shell because he feared he would crush the delicate, naked creatures inside. Instead of relying on brute force, the Great Raven used his cunning and a gentle, bubbling voice to coax them out safely.

What physical sensation did the first human experience upon leaving the shell?

The first human to emerge experienced a sharp shock of cold air that bit his skin. This intense cold forced him to gasp, filling his lungs with the first breath of air he had ever taken, which was a stark contrast to the warm, wet darkness inside the shell.

Where exactly did the first humans emerge according to this story?

The first humans emerged on the spit of Rose Spit, located at Naikoon. This specific beach is described as a cold, windy place where two oceans clash, leaving behind dark, ribbed sand, rotting kelp, and cold mud where the ancient clam shell was half-buried.

How did Yahl's attitude toward the creatures differ from a typical predator?

Instead of viewing the tiny, shivering creatures as prey, Yahl found them too strange and interesting to eat. His primary motivation was curiosity and amusement; he wanted to see them walk and explore the vast world, prompting him to act as a guide rather than a hunter.

What did the world look like before the humans crawled out of the clam?

Before humans emerged, the world was a desolate, silent place of wetness, shadow, and endless tides. There were no longhouses, iron axes, or people to burn wood or sing to the salmon. The sky was permanently covered by a heavy, gray blanket of fog.
