Lean closer, child. The fire is dying, and my breath is growing as thin as the morning mist that clings to the hemlock needles. Do not look at the shadows dancing on the cave wall; look at me. Your eyes are the last mirrors I have left to reflect the faces of those who came before. Soon, the ash of this hearth will be cold, and if you do not carry my words, the story of our blood will sleep forever in the silent dirt. Listen. Do you hear the wind howling through the gorge? It is the same wind that carried the first cry of our ancestors.

The Splitting of the Great Stone

Before there were paths through the bamboo, before the wild boar learned to fear the spear, there was only the mountain. It was a dark, wet world, wrapped in a blanket of heavy grey fog. At the spine of the world, where the earth touches the belly of the sky, stood Pinsebukan—the giant rock. It was moss-grown, cold, and harder than the iron we forge today. It had stood since the first sunrise, silent and unbroken, watching the clouds crawl across the valleys like white worms.

But the earth was lonely. The mountain groaned in its sleep, a deep, rumbling ache that vibrated through the roots of the ancient trees. Then, on a morning when the frost was thick enough to snap the ferns, a sound shattered the silence. It was not the crack of thunder, nor the slide of loose shale. It was a sharp, tearing scream of stone splitting against stone. A great seam opened in the belly of the giant rock, yawning wide to reveal a darkness warmer than the air outside.

Out of the Womb of Earth

From that dark crack, the first of us crawled. Imagine the shock of it, child. They had no words, no names. Their skin was wet with the primeval fluid of the stone, sticky like the sap of the pine. The first to step out was a man, his limbs stiff, his fingers clawing at the rough, cracked clay of the mountain slope. The chill of the mountain air hit his bare chest like a blow from a stone axe. He sucked in his very first breath—a sharp, burning gasp that filled his lungs with the scent of wet earth, rotting leaves, and pine resin. It was the first human breath this world had ever known.

Behind him came another, a woman, her hair tangled with the dust of the rock’s deep heart. They stood on the trembling earth, shivering, their eyes blinking against the pale, watery light of a sun they had never seen. But there was a third who emerged, a giant of a man who looked upon the vast, empty valleys, the roaring rivers below, and the endless green canopy. The wildness of the world frightened him. He shook his head, cried out in fear, and retreated back into the dark womb of the stone, which closed behind him with a heavy, final thud. Only two remained to face the wilderness.

The Sacred Path of Gaya

Those two were our father and mother. They stood naked on the cold slopes of Pinsebukan, their feet sinking into the wet mud. They had no tools, no fire, and no knowledge of how to survive the bitter nights. But the mountain did not leave them to perish. In the rustle of the oak leaves and the call of the grey-cheeked fulvetta, they heard the whispers of the earth. They learned the Gaya—the sacred law that governs all living things under the sky.

They learned that we do not own the forest; we are merely its guests. The trees taught them which roots would heal a fever and which berries would bring sleep. The river taught them how to speak to the water before dipping their bamboo vessels. They learned to hunt the barking deer, not with greed, but with a prayer of gratitude, returning the bones to the soil so the spirit could run again. This is the law we have kept for generations, carved into our hearts as deeply as the facial tattoos that mark our skin. It is the thread that binds us to the stone, to the forest, and to each other.

Keepers of the Flame

Now, look at my hands. See how the skin is dry and split, like the bark of an old cedar? These hands have held the bow, have planted the millet, and have buried the dead. But now, they can barely hold this stick to stir the embers. The valleys below us are changing. The strangers come with their iron roads and their loud voices, cutting down the ancient trees that remember the first sunrise. They do not know the name of Pinsebukan. They do not hear the stone whisper.

That is why you must remember, child. When I am gone, and my bones are laid beneath the floor of our hut to join the soil, you must tell this story to your children. Tell them of the day the giant rock split open. Tell them of the wet mud between our ancestors’ toes, and the first cold breath that gave us life. Keep the fire burning in your heart, even when the darkness seems absolute.

The last red ember in our hearth fades now, turning to grey ash. A thin wisp of smoke rises, twisting slowly toward the smoke-hole in the thatch roof, escaping into the cold, starry night to join the breath of the ancestors who watch us from the high peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the third ancestor choose to return inside the giant rock instead of staying with the other two?

The third ancestor, a man of giant stature, was overwhelmed by the sheer vastness and wildness of the world. Frightened by the roaring rivers, empty valleys, and endless green canopy, he chose to retreat back into the safety of the stone's dark womb, which closed forever behind him, leaving only the first man and woman to populate the earth.

What is the significance of Pinsebukan in the origin story of the Atayal people?

Pinsebukan is the legendary giant rock located at the spine of the world where the earth meets the sky. It represents the physical womb of the Atayal ancestors. The splitting of this sacred, moss-grown stone marks the transition from a lonely, silent world to one inhabited by humans, serving as the geographical and spiritual birthplace of the tribe.

How did the first ancestors learn to survive without tools, fire, or prior knowledge of the wilderness?

The ancestors survived by listening to the whispers of the earth, conveyed through the rustle of oak leaves and bird calls. Through these natural elements, they received the Gaya—the sacred law. This divine guidance taught them how to identify medicinal roots, speak to the river, and hunt respectfully, ensuring their survival in harmony with nature.

What does the concept of 'Gaya' teach the Atayal people about their relationship with nature?

Gaya is the sacred law teaching that humans do not own the forest but are merely its guests. It dictates a life of deep respect and reciprocity with nature, such as offering prayers of gratitude to hunted animals and returning their bones to the soil. This law binds the Atayal people to the stone, the forest, and one another.
